Fraunhofer IME

Institute Overview

The Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology IME (Fraunhofer IME) is a research and technology organisation in the field of applied life sciences. Specifically, it undertakes research from the molecular to the ecosystem level in the areas of pharmacy, medicine, chemistry, agriculture, and environmental and consumer protection.

Fraunhofer IME’s research and development portfolio is focused on industry (small and medium enterprises), as well as the public sector. The organisation has developed an extensive molecular biology tool box and has worked on various biosynthetic pathways for the fermentation of basic chemicals.

Role in BIOCON-CO2

Fraunhofer’s role in BIOCON-CO2 is centred on the following:

  • Participation in determination of gas requirements for bioconversion processes and effect of impurities
  • Extensive analysis of limiting factors for growth and product yield of clostridia using available infrastructure and methods
  • Strain development of CO2-gas fermenting clostridia for improved production of C3-C6 alcohols
  • Strain development of CO2-gas fermenting clostridia for enhanced tolerance towards oxygen
  • Fermentation of gas-fermenting bacteria with premixed gasses and support in fermentation under real industrial relevant conditions
  • Support in dissemination activities
