ENGIE Laborelec

Institute Overview

Laborelec is part of ENGIE, a world leader in energy. It is a leading research and expert service provider in the field of electrical power and new energy technology with more than 60 years expertise. Core activities are related to the production, distribution and use of electricity (from renewable, fossil and nuclear energy sources). ENGIE Laborelec offers a multidisciplinary approach, with more than 260 co-workers (engineers, PhD and technicians).

Over the last years, a dedicated team of experts from ENGIE Laborelec has been involved in carbon capture research, through corporate programs and European collaborative projects. Specialized competences relevant to the current proposal include measurement capabilities for gas composition and Particulate Matters/aerosols monitoring. Moreover, ENGIE Laborelec has not only extensive historical knowledge about the flue gas composition of power plants burning various fuels (coal, biomass, gas) and other ‘fuels’ in cocombustion (sewage sludge, pet cokes) but also about the different types of flue gas treatment processes (De-NOx systems, de-dusting, Flue Gas Desulphurization).

Role in BIOCON-CO2

ENGIE Laborelec will be mainly involved in WP2 (Tasks 2.1 and 2.2) and WP9 with the following contribution:
• To provide a portfolio of the typical flue gas composition from power plants with different types of fuels (coal, gas biomass).
• To assess the typical flue gas composition from other types of industries (iron & steel, waste incinerator) through onsite measurement campaigns.
• To support the definition of a realistic synthetic gas mixture as much as possible representative of the real expected composition.
• In collaboration with the experts in biology and fermentation process, to contribute to the identification of the flue gas treatment processes required to comply with gas input specifications for bioconversion processes.
• To participate in dissemination events.
